Our Industry – By the numbers

COVID-19 has seriously impacted the demand for most products in the organic food and supplement industry in Canada. Between panic buying, shortages and logistics challenges, what we have seen is unprecedented in modern times, excluding wartime scenarios.

A small glimpse into the numbers show some very strong growth in sales: beverages saw an increase of 15.80% in demand in June vs pre-COVID 19, similar to the breads and seasonings group, which saw an increase of 16.56% when compared to pre-pandemic levels. The lockdown also created an opportunity for many to bake and cook at home and this is reflected in a 29.71% and 25.46% increase in demand for baking mix and baking supplies, respectively, with flours at 65.95% higher demand vs pre-COVID19 after three consecutive months at over 100% compared to the same period. Coffee beans saw volumes 36.34% higher in June than before the pandemic hit, with ground coffee at 14.76%.

Other June highlights include pizza (10.20%), nuts (26.62%), sweeteners (26.28%) and prepared foods (66.47%).

Summer has not been cancelled

There is no doubt we are facing unprecedent changes in our lives due to the pandemic and no clear timeline for everything being 100% back to normal. Nonetheless, we can (and perhaps should) lift morale and be responsible at the same time by enjoying summer in a safe fashion.

Outdoor activities are a great way to benefit from sunlight exposure, which improves Vitamin D production, and get moving! If you live in a city, a short drive to nearby smaller towns, provincial parks and lakes can do wonders to our mental health by providing a change of scenery, a fresh new perspective and an opportunity to support the local economy. Frisbee, bike rides and picnics are relatively low-cost activities that can generate amazing summer memories for kids and adults.

Many restaurants are now allowed to open their patios and dining outside can be a vastly different experience than indoors since you get the feeling you are enjoying the company of family and friends in a responsible manner and not putting your health and others’ at risk. This is also a great way to support your favorite establishments of the sort since most of them remained closed for months since March and not all of them were able to compensate for the lost revenue from patrons by offering take-out meals and delivery services.

Drive-in theatres might be making a comeback! According to Narcity, the Cadillac Fairview Markville Mall’s parking lot was turned into a large drive-in theatre last month: “The event was a pilot project to help ring in the summer season and welcome guests back as malls finally began to reopen last month. Tickets were exclusively offered to CF Insiders and charity partners from Markham Stouffville Hospital, as well as CF Markville retail clients and employees. Movie-goers were provided complimentary popcorn and drinks from Kernels for an extra delicious experience. This was the first-ever drive-in pilot CF has hosted, and the company confirmed to Narcity that they hope to introduce others this summer.”

We can safely assume gatherings and some activities will be restricted in Canada and in the U.S. for the rest of 2020 but this should not mean we cannot enjoy this season without risking our health and well-being. This is an opportunity for us to exercise our creativity and try out alternative activities while enjoying the warm weather and going outside. Make sure you follow the government’s guidelines and do not forget that having fun has major positive impacts on our mental health and that, perhaps, is even more meaningful in 2020.

Featured Brand: Dr. Hauschka

Dr. Hauschka skin care products contain zero mineral oils, silicones, PEGs and synthetic preservatives. Instead, they are made of 100% natural raw ingredients – most of which are organic and often even of biodynamic quality. Naturally, our Skin Care and Make-up ranges are also certified under the NATRUE label. And yet the highest quality seal that we bear is still the name of our founder: Dr. Hauschka.

The skin is our largest organ – and one that is regulated with the utmost precision. It follows different rhythms and has different needs. During the day, for example, it likes protective skin care and at night liberating, stimuli-packed night care, which helps it regenerate.

Our skin can also be influenced by the seasons and our age. At Dr. Hauschka, we therefore refer to skin conditions, which appear and disappear, rather than fixed skin types. Our skin care concept is as rhythmic as life itself. After all, we believe it is important to respond to and respect the skin’s rhythms.

As a result, we have developed individual skin care plans for the various different skin conditions. All of these share the commonality of three skin care steps at night and the nourishing trio in the morning. This trio of cleansing, toning and moisturizing is optimally tailored to the skin’s needs on a morning. Cleansing removes the excess metabolic products that the skin has excreted overnight. In the second skin care step, aqueous medicinal plant preparations tone the skin while a select daytime skin care product moisturizes it and protects it against environmental influences.

Want to try Dr. Hauschka’s three stop skin care routine for yourself? This month we are releasing the all new Dr. Hauschka trial sets. Each set contains a trial size cleanser, toner and day cream for the needs of different skin conditions. There are 5 different sets designed for the following skin conditions: normal, sensitive, combination, mature and dry, reddened skin.
